Murlene Oakley Lewis

January 26, 1941 — December 2, 2017

Funeral services for Murlene Oakley Lewis will be held 2:00PM, Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Midway Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Willard McCartney, Jr. and Ralph Hickman officiating. Interment will follow at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur.
Murlene was born January 26, 1941 in Davis, OK to the late Roy G. & Willie Lavada (Rushing) Oakley. She died Saturday, December 2, 2017 in Yukon, OK, at the age of 76. Murlene and Russell Weller Lewis, Jr. were married on June 13, 1968 in Reno, NV. He preceded her in death on January 5, 2013.
Murlene grew up in Davis. Following her 1958 graduation from Davis High School, she attended Murray State College in Tishomingo, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen in 1960. Later Murlene attended the University of Science and Arts in Chickasha prior to attending the University of Oklahoma, where she received a master’s degree in Education. Following her graduation from OU, Murlene taught school in Oklahoma and California. She also owned and operated “A Daisy a Day” flower shop in Sulphur for 15 years, prior to teaching Floral Design at Platt College. She and Russell owned and operated the Lewis Rx Ranch south of Sulphur for some 25 years,
Later she and Russell moved to Houston, where she worked for the U.S. Pollution Co., which later became known as Union Pacific Railroad. From Houston, she and Russell moved to Salt Lake City, UT and from there, they were transferred to Wichita, KS, where she later retired.
Murlene was truly one of a kind. She literally never met a stranger. No matter where she went, she recognized someone and of course, struck up a conversation. She was full of life. Her beauty radiated from her heart to her appearance. Murlene was a very proud mother and grandmother. She was very quick to share with others about her family. She and Russell found no issue with driving from Houston to Oklahoma, simply to watch her grandsons play a ball game, only to leave when the game was over and drive back to Houston.
Murlene was very proud to be from Davis, Oklahoma and would let you know she was. She kept a strong bond with her high school classmates throughout the years, as well as many other Murray County friends. Murlene will forever be remembered as one who said what she thought and cared for others.
Survivors include her son, Russell Weller “Trey” Lewis, III and fiancé Amanda Elliott of Mooreland, OK; three grandsons, Klayton Kache Lewis, Kegan Kard Lewis & wife Jezzni and Oakley Joe Lewis, all of Mooreland; four great-grandchildren, Tripp Klay Lewis, Tuff Ledger Lewis, Jemma Blake Lewis and Judge Axel Lewis; sisters-in-law, Donna Gilstrap & husband Jody of Midwest City, OK, JoAnn Rackley of Sulphur and Wanda Oakley of Prague; as well as numerous niece & nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Murlene was preceded in death by one grandson, Russell Weller Lewis, IV; and one brother, Jimmie Grant Oakley.
