Roy Foster Cooper

January 11, 1940 — February 15, 2023

Roy Foster Cooper was born January 11, 1940, in Lawton, OK, to the late Cecil “Cub” and Annie (Morris) Cooper. He died on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at his home in Hennepin, at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 4 days.

Roy grew up in the Hennepin area, attending school at Woodland. At the age of 17, Roy joined the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam Conflict as a member of the Navy UDT, reaching the rank of First-Class Petty Officer. His thirty years of service to our country led him to receive numerous prestigious metals and accommodations including the Purple Heart with two clusters, the National Defense Medal with one Star, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, a Unit Citation, the Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Service Star, and the Silver Service Star. Roy was a very proud American and extremely proud of his service.

After returning from the Navy, Roy spent many years owning and operating his own trucking company hauling rock, bridge beams and cattle. Along with his trucking, he served with the Murray County Sheriff’s Reserves and the Davis Police Reserves. He was honored to be a part of the Murray County Reserves that assisted with the Murrah Building Bombing in Oklahoma City in 1995. Roy was also a retired member of the Hennepin Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Choctaw Veterans Association.

If you knew Roy Cooper, you know he was a very proud member of the Choctaw Nation. His passion for his native heritage grew stronger with his age. He spent many years working within the Choctaw Language Program helping others learn their native tongue. Roy attended the Faith Center Church in Sulphur, where he was active with the Harvest Basket Food Ministries.

Roy was a very friendly man and one who never met a stranger. He enjoyed his morning trips to the coffee shop and visiting with friends around town, often leaving those he had made contact with in a happier mood.
