Archie Hugh Lawson, Jr, better known by family and friends as “J.R.,” was born October 18, 1948, in Checotah, OK to the late Ted and Jewell Nadine (Sisk) Lawson. He died on Friday, August 30, 2024, in Sulphur, at the age of 75.
J.R. proudly served in the United States Marine Corp, during the Vietnam War. Because of his loyal devotion to our country, along with numerous selfless acts, he was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart Medal, as well as a Silver Star Medal. J.R. was a formidable man with the gentlest heart. His time in Vietnam left him with mixed emotions but no regrets in serving his country. He encouraged his daughters to obtain their education, speak up and speak often and to not put up with anything from anyone. He had a green thumb and enjoyed working in the yard. J.R. firmly believed in Jesus Christ. He prayed for and encouraged others constantly. He enjoyed reading and studying his Bible.
J.R. was generous and was always willing to help anyone in need. Being a grandparent was one of his greatest accomplishments, often saying “grandkids are where it is at.” In his later years, he showed interest in baking cornbread like his momma did and would often talk about how loving his parents were to him and how fortunate he was to have such a wonderful and loving mom and dad.
