Brenda Sue McCaskill

Brenda Sue McCaskill, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, nurse, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, at the age of 77. She passed quietly, at home, while watching late-night television beside the love of her life, her husband, John, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage.

Brenda was born on January 16, 1949, to Robert Leon Wood and Ona Bernice Kirby Wood. She graduated from Sulphur High School in 1967. On July 30, 1966, she married John Van McCaskill in Sulphur, Oklahoma, beginning a beautiful marriage that would span six decades.

Together, Brenda and John built a life centered around family, faith, love, and adventure. They welcomed their daughter, Christina Paige, and son, John Lance, and later delighted in their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Brenda treasured her family deeply, but she especially adored her husband. Their love and devotion to one another remained at the heart of her life.

After settling in Oklahoma City, Brenda began what would become a remarkable nursing career. She was an accomplished registered nurse and became one of the first neonatal nurse practitioners in the state of Oklahoma through the University of Oklahoma in connection with Children's Hospital. Her work caring for fragile newborns and their families was not simply a career-it was a calling. Brenda loved her patients and their families dearly, and that love was returned by the many lives she touched.

Outside of nursing, Brenda enjoyed her sororities and treasured the friendships she made throughout her life. She especially loved her local Canasta card group, affectionately known as the "Golden Girls." Those friendships, laughter, cards, and shared memories brought her great joy.

Brenda and John also loved to travel. Over the years, they made many wonderful trips together, including cherished journeys back and forth to Scotland. Their adventures became treasured memories that they carried throughout their marriage.

Brenda was a member of Crossway Church, where her faith was an important part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Leon Wood and Ona Bernice Kirby Wood, and her son-in-law, Clendon Babb.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, John Van McCaskill; her daughter, Christy Babb of Sulphur; her son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Angela McCaskill of Mustang; and her beloved grandchildren: Chase Blankenship and wife Alyson, Carter Babb, Cameron Babb and wife Aubrey, Dalton McCaskill and wife Madison, Aspen Brown and husband Austin, Sage McCaskill, and Ivy McCaskill.

She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Hunter, Josie, Quinn, Benjamin, and Arden, who brought her immeasurable joy.

Brenda is also survived by her sister, Jo Freeman and husband Gary; niece, Lory Runyan and husband Bear; and nephew, Andy Freeman and wife Tyger, along with many other extended family members and dear friends.

Brenda leaves behind a legacy of love that reaches far beyond her professional accomplishments. She was a woman who cared deeply, loved fiercely, laughed often, and gave herself wholeheartedly to the people around her. Her patients knew her compassion, her friends knew her laughter, and her family knew a love that never wavered.

Above all, Brenda was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her greatest joy was her family, and her greatest love was John. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM, Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Crossway First Baptist Church, in Sulphur. Pastor Bill Leveridge will officiate the service.
