Darla Jean Higgins was born on September 16, 1956, in Wynnewood, to the late Jesse Norris & Wilda Fern (Reynolds) Green. She died on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at her home in Joy, at the age of 68. Darla and Dennis Lee Higgins were married on November 22, 1976, in Wynnewood. To this union were born four children, Darren, Austin, Jessica, and Huston.
Darla grew up just outside of Wynnewood. She attended Joy School until the eighth grade and completed her high school years in Wynnewood. After graduating from Wynnewood High School, Class of 1975, she attended the nursing program at MidAmerica Vo Tech, completing her certification in 1976. Darla later attended Western Oklahoma State College where she earned her Registered Nurse's degree in 1994.
After she and Dennis married, they resided in Moore. Once he joined the Air Force, his assignments led the family to live in San Antonio, TX, then Altus, OK, prior to returning to Wynnewood, where she remained until her death.
Darla was a very passionate and caring nurse, with much of her nursing career being spent at the Pauls Valley General Hospital. At the time of her youngest son's birth, Dennis was stationed in San Antionio. It was during this time that she stepped out of nursing for a few years to be a stay-at-home, enjoying every minute with her four children. She returned to nursing in 1992, working in the OB department at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. After Dennis became stationed at Tinker AFB, Darla returned to the Pauls Valley Hospital and remained until 2017, when she joined the staff at Arbuckle Memorial in Sulphur. Throughout her many years in nursing, she was present at the births of many residing in Garvin and Murray Counties.
Darla had a deep love for her four children, her eleven grandchildren and of course her many four-legged animals, especially her goats. She was proud of her large goat herd, and did not shy away from starting a Facebook page to share her goats with others. Being the devoted grandmother that she was, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren's ballgames, track meets and an occasional shot gun sporting event.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis; daughter, Jessica Thomasson & husband Coll of Davis; sons, Darren Higgins & wife Michelle of Midwest City, Austin Higgins & wife Shelby of Wynnewood, and Huston Higgins & wife Angie of Findlay, OH; her grandchildren, Randon, Kirby, Breken, Jaxon, Maverick, Eli, Braxton, Hollie, Hartley, Nash, and Hayes; as well as her two sisters, Ferna Ward of Plano, TX and Diane Grove of Wichita, KS, and her brother, Jesse Green of Wynnewood.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Crossway First Baptist Church, in Sulphur, with Pastor Bill Leveridge officiating. Interment will follow at the Oaklawn Cemetery, in Wynnewood.
