Emagene Gibbs

August 30, 1929 — October 27, 2025

Emagene (Cottrell) Gibbs was born August 30, 1929, west of Davis, to the late Oliver and Gertie (Jeter) Cottrell. She passed into eternal rest on Monday, October 27, 2025, in Pauls Valley, at the age of 96 years, 1 month and 27 days. Emagene and Chester Hugh Gibbs were united in marriage on July 3, 1948, in Gainesville, TX. He preceded her in death on December 28, 2004.

Emagene grew up in the Davis/Woodland area, graduating from Woodland High School in 1947. Once married, she and Chester moved to California, returning to Davis in 1962. After settling back in Davis, Emagene worked as an independent Avon sales agent for a few years, prior to working at the Arbuckle Memorial Hospital. Although she never attended nursing school, she was very skilled and knowledgeable when it came to healthcare. In 1966, Emagene left the hospital and began working for Dr. David Eggenberg at his clinic in Davis. She absolutely loved working for/with Dr. Eggenberg. Emagene formed lifelong friendships with so many patients and co-workers, many of whom she still had contact with.

After retiring from the clinic in 1990, Emagene stayed continually active with civic duties. She volunteered with the Arbuckle Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, worked as a bus driver for INCA, and worked part-time with the Davis Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few. Emagene was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Davis, assisting anytime she was needed.

Emagene was always on the go. If she had her purse and car keys, she was looking for somewhere to go. She and her lady's group, who referred to her as "Emer", enjoyed attending senior dances and singings, going out to eat, playing cards, and doing crafts. In younger years she and Chester enjoyed travelling, as well as going camping with her beloved granddaughters.

Survivors include her son, Chester Gibbs, Jr. & wife Pam; her two granddaughters, Elizbeth and Joy Lea Gibbs; grandson, Richard Vaughn; daughter-in-law, Ronda Gibbs; and son-in-law, Mark Swartz; sister-in-law, Hariette Cottrell; special friend, Sherry Park; as well as several niece and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Emagene was preceded in death by one son, Joe Wesley "Joey" Gibbs; her daughter, Judith Joann "JJ" Gibbs-Swartz; as well as her three brothers, Jimmy, Floyd, and Jerry Cottrell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM, on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Davis, with Pastor Tony Randol officiating. Interment will follow at the Green Hill Cemetery, in Davis.
