Emma Rae Lowery

May 7, 1937 — May 29, 2023

Funeral services for Emma Rae (Woods) Lowery, formerly Emma Rae Stephens, will be held at 10:00AM, on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the Dougherty Baptist Church, with pastors Alan McCoy and Willard McCartney, Jr officiating. Interment will follow at the Dougherty Cemetery.

Emma was born May 7, 1937, in Dougherty, to the late Joshua A. and Hattie L. (Pursley) Woods. She passed from this life on Monday, May 29, 2023, in the home of her daughter, in King George, Virginia. Emma was 86 years and 22 days young.

Emma grew up in Dougherty. In 1953, she married Jim Stephens of Dougherty. To this union were born four daughters, Latana, Jamie Sue, Peggy, and Sherry. Emma and Jim moved to California where she earned her Licensed Vocational Nursing degree at Delta College. Upon graduating, Emma began her nursing career at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, CA, and later worked at the Dameron Hospital.

On May 15, 1982, Emma married Marion C. Lowery, in Lake Tahoe, NV. Being that Marion was in the real estate industry, Emma quickly earned her Real Estate license, which led her to a long career as a broker and owner of agencies in both California and Virginia. Together, she and Marion owned and operated Century 21 At the Beach in Colonial Beach, Virginia.

Upon retiring in 2005, she and Marion moved back to her beloved hometown, Dougherty, OK, to enjoy their retirement years. While living in Dougherty, Emma was active with anything that supported Dougherty. She devoted many hours of service to the Doughtery Alumni Association, the Dougherty Cemetery Association, and the Dougherty Community Improvement Association. She was a faithful member of the Dougherty Baptist Church, and enjoyed visiting with friends, classmates, and neighbors at the Dougherty Senior Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Latana (Stephens) Locke & husband Kenneth of King George, VA and Peggy (Stephens) Van Cleve of Colonial Beach, VA; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Locke) Rathbun, Julia (Trunnell) Williams, Misty (Stokes) McDowney, Roger Huffman, and Kenneth Locke, Jr; seven great-grandchildren, Mac Kenzie Rathbun, Mac Kayla (Rathbun) Snider, Mac Kenley Rathbun, Austin Huffman, Jaelyn Stokes, Kira Williams, and Elijah Williams; one great-great grandson, Wesley Snider; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
