Jimmy Jo McGill, better known by many as “JJ”, was born March 1, 1970, in Ada, OK. He died on Thursday, November 9, 2023, in Oklahoma City, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
JJ was a life-long resident of Murray County, graduating from Davis High School, class of 1988. While in high school, JJ was very active in FFA, showing livestock and participating in ag mechanics. After high school, he attended Murray State College, prior to attending Oklahoma State University, where he earned a master’s degree in Agricultural Education. As an Agricultural Instructor, he spent several years teaching shop classes at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, as well as teaching welding and blacksmithing at the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center in Ardmore. At the time of his death, JJ was working for P&K Stone in Mill Creek, as a procurement / scale clerk.
JJ’s adventurous life had many enjoyments and hobbies. As a charter member of the Murray County Antique Tractor and Implement Club, he devoted countless hours to ensure all club activities were successful. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts of America and participated in historical western reenactments.
JJ spent a vast part of his life mentoring others. His time and efforts spent with students created many lifelong friends, that he often referred to as brothers. In his spare time, JJ enjoyed all aspects of horticulture. He planted large gardens and canned the yearly yields. He also enjoyed quilting, attending quilt show competitions, and all forms of blacksmithing.
Survivors include his beloved soul mate, Lorrie Warren; three children, Makita McGill of Sulphur, and Buddy McGill & Sheriah McGill, both of Davis; his mother, Patsy Workman & husband William of Asher; his step-mother, Mary McGill of Davis; his nine grandchildren, Aiden, Beckett, Camberleigh, Alana, Declan, BryLee, Ayonna, Jayven and Madden; sisters, Amanda Workman-Miron of Ada and April Henderson & husband Matt of Claremore; brother, Tanner McGill; Lorrie's, Matthew Warren and his children, Carlie, Ethan & Baylie; self-adopted/honorary brothers, Brad Bufkin & wife Nikki, Dustin Phillips and Alex Callahan; as well as numerous, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
JJ was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Ray McGill on July 9, 2018.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00PM, on Friday, November 17, 2023, at the Murray County Antique Tractor and Implement Club, 7 miles north of Sulphur on Hwy 177, then east on Tractor Club Road.
