John Alfred Pope

Funeral services for John Alfred Pope will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Sulphur with Pastors Dick Terry and Randy Chapman officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow at the Green Hill Cemetery in Davis.

John was born May 7, 1943 in Sulphur to the late Leo Levi and Zela Inez (Onstok) Pope. He died Sunday, January 24, 2021 in Sulphur, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 27 days. John and the former Ms. Della Sue Bailey were married on December 13, 1974 in Gainesville, TX.

John grew up on the family farm in Sulphur. As a teenager, he worked around the farm milking cows, tending to the cattle and baling hay. After graduating from Sulphur High School in 1962, John enlisted in the Army National Guards, severing six years. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge from the National Guards on November 21, 1969, John returned to Sulphur where he began a career as a truck driver. His first job was driving for Charles White, prior to driving for Bob Bruce. Later he drove for the AMPI, transporting milk. John’s final job was with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, retiring as a Senior Truck Driver in 2004. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. John was very devoted to his family and cherished spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife Della; six daughters, Divene Patrick & husband Mark of Sulphur, Rena Jeter & husband Bill of Durant, Teresa Yates of Sulphur, Sherri Meador of Davis, Katherine Eddy & husband Ronald of Wynnewood and Peggy Atteberry & husband Kevin of Stratford; 16 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Billy Joe Pope of Sulphur, Wanda Brown of Norman, Margaret Miller & husband Fred of Maysville, Dorothy Trett & husband Arnold of Sulphur and Gloria Brooks & husband Ray of Dougherty; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Don Pope.
