Thomas Warren Morton

May 10, 1947 — Jun 22, 2026

Thomas Warren "Tom" Morton, born May 10, 1947, to Dr. Ralph Warren Morton and Maxine Doris Hilbish Morton, lived a life as curious, musical, funny, and free-spirited as the songs he chose to send him on his way.

Tom had an extraordinary mind. As a child, he read the encyclopedia for fun, and he carried that wide-ranging curiosity with him throughout his life. He was a world traveler traipsing across Europe, Africa, and South America, but his favorite place on earth was Jamaica, where he spent every spare moment he could. A committed hippie if ever there was one, Tom was often found in overalls, with long hair, a longer beard, and in his younger years, a baby blue VW bus, Magic, that suited him perfectly.

Music was one of Tom's great languages. His mind was full of songs, lyrics, stories, and references, and he always had a tune to hum or a song to share. Once, when his niece was in a play about the Vietnam War, he sent her 30 CDs of music from the 1960s and 1970s so she would understand the world behind the references. And then, because it was Tom, the music kept coming.

Tom loved animals deeply and was rarely without a dog by his side. His last two, beloved boxers Hannah and Solomon Nine Miles, were among his great companions. Those who loved him like to imagine him now on a beach somewhere, reunited with them.

Tom was a born and died a staunch Sulphur Bulldog, having played quarterback in high school. He was a devoted (some might say "rabid") Oklahoma Sooners fan and a loyal Oklahoma City Thunder fan. He could banter for hours with Stacey and Ricky about the weekend's games!

He worked for years at the Norman Veterans Center in Supplies, enjoyed engaging with the residents and listening to their stories. Upon retirement he moved home and lived in Sulphur until his death.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Murrow Morton and Judith "Judi" Morton Drake; and his brothers, Edward Lee Morton and William "Bill" Hilbish Morton. Survived by niece Stacey Drake Harness, husband Ricky Harness and their children Delaney, Drake, and Duncan. Other nieces, Paige Drake Magee, Ashley Drake Wiley, Faith Morton Westervelt, Leslie Morton Schlarb and their families.
