Services for W.M. “Bunk” Smith were held 2:00PM, Monday, Aug 25, 2014 at Hale’s Memorial Chapel in Davis with Pastor Willard McCartney, Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Dougherty Cemetery with the United States Army rendering full funeral honors.

Bunk was born Feb 16, 1920 in Dougherty to the late Dan & Nannie (Howard) Smith. He died Thursday, Aug 21, 2014 in Davis at the age of 94 years 6 months & 5 days. Bunk and Peggy J. Stephens were married on May 20, 1943 in Arroyo Grande, CA. She preceded him in death on Apr 19, 1997. Also preceding him in death were his two sons, Paul Stephen Smith in Oct 2002 and Dale Ray Smith in Oct 2011 and three brothers, W.D., Howard and Andrew Smith.

Bunk grew up in Dougherty where he attended school. He later graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Engineering. Bunk joined the U.S. Army on Oct 21, 1941 and was honorably discharged on Oct 26, 1945. His service to our country included the Medical Corps during WWII. Bunk was a charter member of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, LA and is still listed on the honor roll there.

Bunk spent his career working as a superintendent for Dolese Bro’s Big Canyon Plant south of Dougherty, retiring in 1985 with 36 years of labor. Before the death of his wife, Bunk & Peggy enjoyed camping in the Colorado mountains. In most recent years, he enjoyed visiting with his friends at the Davis Senior Citizens Center. Bunk was an avid Sooners fan. He enjoyed all things associated with his alma mater and followed Sooner sports faithfully. When his health allowed, Bunk attended the Midway Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include five grandsons, Jeremy Smith, Zackary Paul Smith, David Howard Smith, Dylan Smith & Richard Redmond; two granddaughters, Rachel Smith and Monica Ann Smith; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.
